Shepsu Aakhu has made a career out of writing about his family. In those stories he often plays with timelines, varying Afrikan spiritual traditions and concepts of death and transcendence.
Director Lauren “LL” Lundy is the self-appointed and Aakhu validated “expert” on Aakhu’s spirit plays. She jokes that she may be the only human alive who has read them all (repeatedly), and also directed her share.
In this episode of Nightcap Shepsu and LL geek out a bit on the plays, American pop culture’s obsession within demonizing Black spiritual practices, and their joys in staging challenging work on this often taboo subject matter.
